A letter from the Northern Ireland Office to me dated 1/5/2001.

Dear Mrs Wright

Your letter of 22 April 2000 [This should probably read 2001] with enclosures to the Minister of state has been passed to this office for reply.

Unfortunately there is little I can add to Superintendent Hamill's letter of 12 April 2001. The re-openig of any criminal case is clearly a matter for the Chief Constable and as has been indicated, the police do not intend to conduct a further investigation unless fresh evidence, not previously considered by the Department of Public Prosecutions, becomes available.

I am sorry I cannot be more helpful.

G DODDS

[I doubt if the Chief Constable ever was shown the late Detective M. Patterson's in-depth investigation. It's amazing how many ways the words in these replies are twisted yet the same message is sent out.]
