In a Special Report in the SUNDAY WORLD on ... , journalist Jim Campbell wrote an article with a banner headline,
COPS BLOW LID ON MASON'S 50% GRIP ON THE RUC.
The first three paragraphs of the article state:
Over 50 per cent of RUC men are members of the Freemasons according to a secret survey carried out over the past year inside the force by policemen who oppose Masonic influence.
The officers who are both Protestant and Catholic claim they have nothing against the masons as an organisation but believe it is dangerous that a secret society like the Freemasons should be extensively organised within the RUC.
They claimed the RUC Masonic membership could be as high as 65 per cent and alleged it is often used to "fix" offences - mainly in drink-related cases involving either RUC men or members of their families and even masons outside the force.
